Tricks to Help You Better Get Along with Windows 8

While Windows 8 gets made fun of all the time, it's a very well-thought-out OS for the most part. It's got plenty of surprising features that make your computing life easier.

Try semantic zoom
The Start screen in Windows 8 stores all your app tiles in groups. If you have more than a handful, though, you'll need to do plenty of scrolling to find an individual one. Here's where the new semantic zoom feature comes in.

If you have a touch-enabled monitor, all you need to do is to pinch the Start screen with two fingers; right away, you'll see your entire Start screen show on your screen in compact form. If you don't have a touchscreen, you can do it with your keyboard and mouse, instead. You simply need to roll the mouse wheel while holding the Ctrl button down on the keyboard.

There's an easy way to categorize all your apps
If you like installing plenty of apps, your Start screen will soon become impossibly disorganized. While the semantic zoom feature can help you get a bird's-eye view of all the apps you have, it's still a chore. Categorizing all your apps makes it far easier for you to find what you want.
You can start by dragging an app to an empty area to the far right of the Start screen. You can start building a category around that app. As you keep dragging and dropping tiles around it, Windows will automatically group them. Once you have all the right apps in the set, you simply need to name it: right-click on the group, and select Name group when the option shows up below.

If you insist on closing an app
Windows 8 doesn't want you to close your apps when you're done with them. It expects you to simply switch to new ones while the old ones live on in the background, taking up as little of your computer's capacity as possible. If you really want to close your apps, though, you simply need to click on the top of the screen and drag the mouse all the way to the bottom. You'll see the app first turn into a thumbnail, and then disappear entirely.

You don't need to click on the Search magnifying glass
It's intuitive to think that to search for something on your computer, you need to first bring out the Charms Bar , click on the magnifying glass, and then click on a search field. All this is actually unnecessary. You simply need to go to the Start screen and start typing even if you don't see a search box or cursor anywhere. Windows will automatically open the search boxes and start placing the text that you type in one of them.

You can see the apps and your desktop together
If you have at least two monitors on your computer, Windows 8 lets you place your conventional desktop on one monitor and your app screen on another. Getting Windows to do this, though, isn't as simple as it seems. While you're allowed to put each interface on a different monitor, it only lasts while your computer is idle. The moment you begin using either one of your interfaces, it will take up both monitors. There's a workaround, though.
